Down to earth reading

Web, web, web…I get into the trenches and read, work and digest web. Well I am happy to say I also try and balance my obsession with some history, fiction and science too.

I had been reading/listening to Andy Rutledge’s Design View posts and thinking about maintaining my well rounded world view. I now have a simple but wonderful email in my in-box daily from Merriam-Webster entitled “Word of the Day.” Now it’s part of my morning ritual as I crunch away on my cereal to read the word with my wife and the etymology of the word.

Organizing the Flock

A project request came in recently for a mini-site about two new books, Backyard Bird Songs: Eastern Birds & Western Birds.

I was just finishing up a blog site for R.E.M. and I printed out the new project request from BaseCamp and noted the due date…First week of April.

I began flipping through the pages of the request and began to realize there were about 20+ pages to build for this “mini-site.” Definition of mini-site=unknown to me anymore.

After brief pause I scheduled a meeting with the project manager to discuss the request so I could get started.

It was clear to me the idea was great as is the content but that their is a disconnect between the idea, the design, and the production necessary to make it take “flight”. As a front end web-designer I have a lot to keep up on, the new standards, Flash, CSS, browser rendering issues…and oh yeah design and everything that encompasses.
