Do you listen to Plone?

My initial research would not be complete without mentioning Plone. To be fair Plone may be the most advanced of the four CMS’s I have mentioned so far. Check out who and how Plone is being used.

BTW do you listen to Plone? The name of this CMS pays homage to the band Plone whose music is both simple and playful.

My initial scanning of articles about this content management solution turned up a whole bunch of terms I had never heard of before such as, Zope , Sprints, ZOBD, Python ( sort of ) and well Plone!

Out of the box this CMS has reportedly the steepest learning curve. The project began in 1999 by Alexander Limi, Alan Runyan, and Vidar Andersen and the first version released in 2001 and grew quickly. Now in its 3rd major release Plone and the software has been downloaded over 1 million times up through 2007.

Plone seems to have limitless possibilities and the ability to run on any OS. The admin panels work in almost all internet browsers, which is not something other CMS’s can claim. Installation is said to be simple and additionally the software is built to be friendly to users with disabilities. One of the weaknesses reported in addition to the steep learning curve is the lack of documentation and resources.

My gut tells me Plone is not the CMS for me to work with at this time but I will certainly continue to learn more about Plone an its mysterious friends Zope and Python.

Additionally I also researched Expression and Light CMS. My initial thoughts are that I will need an open source solution that can be hosted on my companies servers and these two options have limitations that will prohibit this crucial need.
